Today’s Practice:

It is a natural inclination to practice empathy by making compassionate choices, and it feels good too. By talking about empathy and compassion as conscious choices, and recognizing them as they occur, we highlight these choices as something worthy. With children, if we ritualize compassion through our own empathic responses, over time, compassion will make its way inside; it will touch their hearts, creating an emotional imprint. Students will begin to display the same empathy, its presence as natural as the air we breathe.

Here are some suggested dialogue questions:

  • What are some ways we can reach out to someone who is need some connection?
  • What does it feel like when you include someone who is an outsider?
  • When have you noticed someone who is compassionate?
